Notes

2016 Record Store Day 'first time' release. Remained available to indie stores for 1 year following its release.

Featuring some of the most iconic and hard-to-find drum breaks, legendary samples, and a who’s who of players and producers including: Bernard Purdie, Isaac Hayes, David Axelrod, the Lafayette Afro Rock Band, the Blackbyrds, Pharoah Sanders, and more. Comprised of four distinct musical strains pressed on translucent-colored vinyl—“Soul Diesel,” “Purple Funk,” “OG Kush,” and “Astral Travelin’”—there’s a trip for every mood. Housed in a special four way fold-out box, each LP comes in its own unique jacket, combining texture and visuals for a truly extrasensory experience.

Pro: Over 160 minutes of choice cuts. Loved the music selection, and I have a pretty large collection. Con: The 4 different-colored vinyl pressings were NOT equal in quality. "Purple Funk" pressing was a disgrace, with audible crackles at loudest spots. "OG Kush" was also a poor press, with a visible, tight warp and a two-beat scuff heard not just during dead space, but at low-level moments as well.Neutral: Even though each side is 18-20 minutes apiece, why were the tracks so compressed? Easily a half inch of wasted space before common run-out area would begin. This compressing made sure the pressing wasn't deep to fully take advantage of the bass work going on.Disc 1 and 4 however were pressed fine and sounded great. If only this had come with a download to enjoy the music on the go, unmarred by the poor pressing quality of two of the records.Nice, but kind of over-the-top packaging. Would be a good deal for less money, for sure.

Only thing-sounds digitally sourced to my ears. Thin, and a bit antiseptic, but who knows. Nice package, we sold out of them quickly, glad I hung on to one.

I'd have to imagine it would be....how hard would it be to put this together from all analogue sources, with the various artists, etc? One of those deals where the value as a whole is worth the fact that sourcing is 99.99999999% certain to be digital.

For anyone still looking for this it appears to be available from King's Road. They appear to ship worldwide. http://kingsroadmerch.com/jazz-dispensary/view/?id=9339&cid=2481

This might be the best thing I picked up on RSD. Any idea how many were pressed?
Thorgahuginn
Agreed. I was fortunate in that no one at my local record store even looked at this set. I took my time deciding whether I wanted to drop the cash on it. I'm glad I did.
Faegal
I ended up getting it, built a Spotify playlist, it arrives tomorrow!

beercanchicken I was/am so intrigued but it was too pricey for the gamble. I wish I could hear some of it somewhere. I TOTALLY get that, in fact, it was on my list as a MAYBE, but when I got to my local store, they had one, and I figured, screw it, how bad can this possibly be given the artists listed. Im glad I could afford to take the gamble, its very very good, but it was certainly pricey.
Shakataxe
How do you know that? Proof or a website?
Fecage
It was a RSD first thing, not an exclusive. They'll be selling it at indie stores through the rest of 2016.
Saithinin
The first run listing was a mistake - this is a RSD Exclusive title.
Tam
I believe "First Run" means 1200 special RSD were pressed so its special but more will be coming later so not THAT special...Good to know it's good, I want to get it.

I agree, this release is solid! RSD website says 1200 were pressed, but it's under first run stuff so I'm not sure if that means that 1200 initially were pressed or 1200 total.
