It’s unfortunate that so many heard CCR lay out probably one of the all time best versions of “Suzy Q” on their first album, and then seemed to dismiss them as if nothing had happened. Then followed “Proud Mary,” a sensational pop song with steady rolling swagger, and still audiences and critics found reasons not to give the members of CCR the time of day.

Happily I was not among them, as that swamp sound drew me in like an infection that wouldn’t let go, and when Green River hit the airways, all of the criticism seemed to be forgotten, with CCR becoming the new hippie darlings of the late 60’s and early 70’s, delivering an intoxicating album that nearly re-introduced CCR to the world with rich raw guitar work that was infused with lyrics and vocals that were evocative of a new decade and the rise of their California take on swamp music.

“Bad Moon Rising” was the single, and it took hold like a driving cosmic storm, inclining those who hadn’t picked up a guitar when The Beatles set the world ablaze, to do so now, and for those who couldn’t play, CCR was hands down the inspiration of air-guitar. “Bad Moon Rising” struck a chord, coming across like The Beatles’ “Daytripper,” and sounding just as ambivalent as Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” reshaping and redefining music with a haunting new atmosphere. That being said, “Lodi” turned out to be the unexpected crowning achievement, and set the direction for CCR in the future, though to my way of thinking, Green River is the band’s most sustainable achievement, a thumbprint on a map that can not be avoided.

Green River was the soundtrack of our lives in Vietnam, it sounded green, it sounded muddy, the music radiated heat waves and an epochal force that was not only able to sustain us, but give us the emotional courage to move forward, as the album’s narration seemed to speak to those of us in uniform, where a knowing wink or smile would say that it was just about time to wind the day down, put the choppers to bed, slip off our boots, fire up a number and settle in for the evening as we watched trip-flairs and luminaries light up the night sky. Now, I’m not saying that CCR made being in Viet Nam enjoyable, what I am saying is that there was a magic held within those grooves that made life tolerable, and gave us all something to dance to in our heads as we set about the next day’s tasks of endless choppers, overheated jeeps … another day of putting one foot in front of the other.

Introduced in 2002 on 180 gram vinyl, this is an album that no one’s record collection is complete without.

*** The Fun Facts: Tom Fogerty's friend from work had a friend whose name was Creedence Nuball. John Fogerty took the "Clearwater" part from a beer advertisement. "Revival" referred to the band's rebirth after playing four years as the Golliwogs.

Green River was actually called Putah Creek in Winters, California, and part of John Fogerty’s childhood, with the name Green River being lifted from a soda pop syrup label … of course, that was back when soda was made with actual syrup.
